Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down.  -Romans 12:15 (MSG)

“The heart knoweth its own sorrow and there are times when, like David, it is comforting to think that our tears are put in a bottle and not one of them forgotten by the one who leads us in paths of sorrow.”
― Hannah Hurnard, Hinds' Feet on High Places

Signs.  Signs.  Everywhere.  Signs.

I've been Google translating it up around here this week.  I've made signs, notes, cheat sheets, flash cards, and other randomness.  If I actually go to the next step and display all of the many signs, our house is going to look like some sort of surreal, ginormous user manual.

I've also utilized the free service as my own version of 'Ukrainian Hooked on Phonics'.  I'm not so sure it's working for me but maybe the kids from Ukraine will give me an E for effort and a grin for creativity.  It will be a real hoot if we find out they speak Russian instead of Ukrainian.  HA!

One of my little signs displays our farm rules (see below).  The rules were taken from the Charlotte Mason kindergarten curriculum.  They have been our 'family/farm rules' for many years now.  In full disclosure, these four rules have always been more for me than the kids and I like to keep them posted to keep me in check.  I have plans to print these in reverse and try to transpose them on wood to make a 'sho nuf' sign.  I'll let you know how/if that turns out....

OK...so, weird post but, here's to signs, translators and a valiant, last minute effort to make our home as nurturing and enriching for our (semi)bilingual guests as the Miami Children's Museum.

Aim HIGH, FarmSmiths, aim HIGH!!!

And after the turkey, we all trot back to school.  Today on the board, we have a quote from C.S. Lewis' work, The Four Loves.  Discussion questions to follow!

Peace and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE from the farm!

I think I'm tired- good tired but tired nonetheless  The lady that came to the farm today to interview our family and perform the safety inspection (for our near future hosting through New Horizons for Children) was absolutely lovely.  I was very encouraged by her visit.  I am  happy to report that Carson's biking accident, Greg's unicycle in the driveway, the retelling of my disastrous attempts at building beds yesterday, our off the wall answers to the interview questions nor any of a number of other possible 'well, there ya go's' seemed to stop the train today.  It looks as if we will be moving along to the next stage of this journey next weekend:  orphan hosting training.    Thank you all for your prayers and continued support!  So much love from a tired crew at the farm to you tonight!

The (re)Purposed Pumpkin

I bought a cheap bouquet of fall colored flowers yesterday at the grocery store without really thinking out the full 'decorating plan'.

Today, the kids and I went around the house and gathered the surviving Halloween pumpkins and gave them a little Thanksgiving remodel.
Picture
To make the pumpkin vases, hollow out a small pumpkin, shove a (recycled yet clean) ziploc bag in the center, fill with water and flowers (a small potted mum or other such would work great here too) and there ya go!
*If you add a touch of bleach to the water your cut flowers will last longer.

Picture
To make the pumpkin candlesticks, find a little girl with mad hammer skills and let her whack a hole in the center of those hard, little gourd pumpkins.  (Ours were formerly used as wheels on a Cinderella carriage.)

You can see we have a pattern emerging with  Emma and the hammer around here.
